The Teenguin cardigan is one of 11 engaging patterns from Penguin: a Knit Collection by Anna Maltz - a printed book packed with patterns, photographs, illustrations and stories, all inspired by penguins. Available from annamaltz.com and your LYS.

A totally contemporary, yet slightly vintage feeling cardigan inspired by teenage penguins as they moult from chicks into adulthood. Using a heavy DK weight yarn, the body and sleeves of this cardigan are worked flat in a lacy chevron stitch incorporating an unusual amount of garter stitch. This means the delicate lines of lace don’t need to be disrupted by ribbed cuffs, as the stitch sits flat of its own accord. The main part of the button and buttonhole bands are worked as-you-go and then knitted up from live stitches in the loopy section. Plenty of buttons help avoid gaping button bands. The underarms are grafted, so all you need to sew up are the arms and the upper button/hole bands that attach to the loopy part of the yoke. There is a significant difference between the gauge needed for the lace and the loops, which might be the biggest fiddle involved in this cardi. Instructions for the lace stitch pattern are both written and illustrated in a chart. Additional instructions are given for working a successful swatch.
