This shawl concept started many years ago when I was trying to wrap my brain around lace. I understood the triangle construction of a top-down lace shawl, but I just couldn’t figure out how to get lace to match up. I really just wanted a lace mess shawl that I could knit free-hand. Placing yarn overs wherever I saw fit. Here’s my finished product!

A note on yarn choice. You can really use any type of yarn you’d like for this pattern. You could use very heavy alpaca (like I did) or you could use very light lace weight. Just use the needle size that the yarn you’ve chosen requests on the ball band.

You can knit one out of sock-weight yarn. I’d say you’d need about 400 meters of it, and around 300 meters of worsted weight. This pattern would be great for displaying a small amount of handspun yarn too!

Enjoy!
