Size
Women’s medium – fits most women (and men!)

Suggested Yarn
Worsted weight yarn (18 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in Stocking Stitch on a US #8/ 5mm needle). Shown in Caron Simply Soft Party. I used just under 2/3 of the ball of the MC for a hat with a rolled brim (2 oz/110 yd).

Needles
Size US #6/4mm, 16” circular for ribbing
Size US #8/5mm, 16” circular for body of hat
Additional needle(s) for binding off.

Gauge
18 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch on US #8/5mm needle.

Ribbing
Using the size US #6/ 4mm 16” circular needle, CO 90 sts in MC. Work k3, p2 ribbing for:
15 rows (2 in.) for a hat with a plain brim
or
24 rows (3 ½ in) for a hat with a rolled brim.

Body of Hat
Switch to size US #8/5mm 16” circular needle. Knit 3 rounds plain (in stocking stitch) in MC.

Pattern – two color work
Work pattern according to chart (5 repeats of the 18 stitch-wide pattern). To control length of floats, I suggest catching the float at the back in the middle of any stretch of five or more stitches. The last row of the pattern has fifteen MC color stitches between the three CC stiches, and I caught the float three times in each stretch.

Top
Work another 12 rows (1 ¾ inch) plain (stocking stitch) in MC

Bind Off and Finishing
Turn hat inside out and bind off using 3-needle bind off. Weave in ends.

Because this pattern is knit in the round, a stitch is pulled up at the place where each new row begins. In this pattern, with only one stitch between the tips of the ears, this intermediate stitch creates a tie between the ears of two of the owls. Correct this by adding a duplicate stich in the MC over the CC stitch that looks out of place.
