The Three Questions shawl is the third in The Tolstoy Collection. These shawls showcase one, two, and three colors and will feature large sections of garter while interspersing different textures, shapes, or color play.

In The Three Questions, Leo Tolstoy tried to find answers to the three most important questions in life. The stakes are not quite as high with this shawl, which merely aims to ask: what three colors make your heart race?

Skills: simple lace, smocking, and grafting in garter stitch (step-by-step instructions provided)

Yarn: 3 skeins sport weight yarn, at least 280 yards each. CC1 and CC2 should be the same yardage as each other, and the MC should be equal or greater to that yardage.

Sample shown in Fiber Optic Yarns Heaven Sport, 70% superwash merino, 20% cashmere, 10% silk, 280 yards/255 m per 4 oz/114 g:

  • MC: Midnight Rendezvous, 1 skein
  • CC1: Fort Knox, 1 skein
  • CC2: Brimstone, 1 skein

Needles: US 7 (4.5-mm) needles to knit flat, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Tools:

  • Gram scale
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking wires and pins

Blocked Gauge (wet blocked, stretched and pinned):
19 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter

Blocked Size (stretched and pinned):
80”/203 cm wingspan, 17”/43 cm deep
