The Try-Works
by Ann Weaver
ERRATA from very early versions: Under Body, step 2, last row should end k1, p4, sm, k4
“Like a plethoric burning martyr, or a self-consuming misanthrope, once ignited, the whale supplies his own fuel and burns by his own body.”
Moby-Dick, “The Try-Works”
A tailored, cabled cardigan, with cabled motifs based on the curling smoke of the try-works, the apparatus on the whale ship that renders the whale’s blubber into oil.
The body of this cardigan is worked in one piece to the underarms, then divided for fronts and back. The sleeves are worked in the round from the cuff to the underarm, at which point the sleeve cap is worked flat.
