This has always been one of our most popular designs. In addition to it being a stunning way to decorate your room, as a wall-hanging or afghan, it is ideal for using up all the oddments of yarn you have accumulated.

It is also brilliant as a group project as each person can work to their own gauge and the pieces are guaranteed to fit perfectly.

The photos show:

  • The original ‘Tilting at Windmills’

  • A close-up (where you will notice some distortion because the afghan has been hanging on a wall for eight years and is clipped to a backing at the points where you can see wrinkles)

  • A group project from a branch of the Women’s Institute in Cheshire, England (See more afghans from Cheshire WI, all inspired by this pattern)

The booklet of instructions explains, in simple language, not signs and symbols, how to make the design the way you want it.

We are mathematicians at heart and this afghan has been the starting point at many a workshop. We ask the same question whether we are working with tiny children or university professors: ‘Is this a pattern?’ If you don’t believe that question can provoke an argument, ask a few friends round to look at it with you. Then go on to ask them to describe what they see. Their answers may surprise you.

We also have a cushion version of Tilting at Windmills
