Her touch such love and longing filled
he raised his eyes, his mourning stilled,
and felt his heart new-turned to flame
for her that through peril to him came.

’Oh Lúthien! Oh Lúthien,
more fair than any child of Men!
Oh, loveliest maid of Elvenesse,
what might of love did thee posses
to bring thee here to terror’s lair?
Oh, flower of Elfland ever fair!’

  • J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lay of Leithian

The Tinuviel shawlette is a sweet crescent shaped shawl with a diamond patterned body worked in garter and stocking stitch, and a deep lace border representing the wilderness of Beleriand that surrounded the enchanted kingdom of Doriath. Worked in a wool/silk blend fingering weight yarn, it is a delicate but warm layering piece perfect for early spring or late autumn wanderings.

Materials Needed:

  • @400y fingering weight yarn in a wool/silk blend (solid, kettle dyed, or two-toned yarn where the tones are low contrast)
  • 4mm (US 6) needles or size needed for a pleasing fabric
  • @2 dozen stitch markers
  • cable needle

A Note on Gauge:
Gauge is not given for this pattern; for a shawl in particular, achieving a fabric you like is more important than achieving the same gauge as the designer. I have included in the pattern a break down of the percentage of yarn used per section; keep an eye on that to determine whether you have enough yarn to finish your project as written.

A Note on Size:
The instructions are for one size only, but it is easy to size up this pattern either by using a heavier weight of yarn (on correspondingly larger needles), or by following the yardage use guidelines given within the pattern.

Instruction Style:
This pattern is fully written: the use of written instructions is optional (except for the garter tab set up).
This pattern is fully charted (except for the garter tab set up); the use of charted instructions is optional.

Credits:
The lace motif used in the border of this pattern comes from the work of Naomi Parkhurst.
