I grew up in a small ranch town on the Big Island of Hawaii. The nearest movie theater was an hour away whereas some of the nicest beaches on the planet were half that. So, you can probably guess where I chose to spend my time.

Although I loved being at the beach, riding the waves was not my favorite, probably due to too many wipeouts. What I really enjoyed was swimming beyond the breaking waves and feeling the swell of the ocean. If you stay there long enough you’ll notice that the bigger swells almost always came in sets of three waves. This was the inspiration for the stitch pattern in this hat.

This is a slightly slouchy hat pattern made for warmth without sacrificing style. This pattern is written for one size but can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing your stitch count.

This hat pairs nicely with the Twisted Sand Mitts and the Waves on the Sand cowl. Keep your eyes on the horizon for more patterns in this collection.

I hope you enjoy knitting this hat as much as I enjoyed designing it and that it will keep your head warm while you dream of walking on tropical sandy beaches with waves crashing at your feet.
