The Mummer’s Parade is a longtime New Year’s tradition in Philadelphia, a strut of string bands and feathered, flashy costumes through the heart of downtown.

After the parade, there is an after-parade party that takes place in South Philly on the stretch of Second Street fondly known as Two Street.

In the greyest part of winter, there is an amazing splash of bright color, and the Two Street Shawl embodies this. It’s an asymmetrical, curved bias shape, worked in a simple garter ridge stripe with a pop of boldly color lace.

The finished shawl has a wingspan of approximately 60” after blocking and a center back of approximately 18” after blocking.

Exact gauge is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.

The pattern is written for a full skein of fingering yarn and a contrasting mini skein; the sample shown is worked in Cheshire Cat by Frabjous Fibers in Salt and Pepper (Color A) and Black and Blueberry (Color B).
