Unicorn Luck is part of The Mythology Collection, three shawls by Kino Knits. The collection also includes the two-skein Dragon’s Fortune and three-skein Apollo’s Favor patterns. All three shawls can be knit in any yarn weight/gauge and any yardage!

Got that special, glorious, riot of color skein? Got a plan for it, or did it just lure you in with its siren song?

The Unicorn Luck shawl has got you covered – literally. It’s a crescent-shaped shawl inspired by my youngest son. In the center lace panel, you’ll find prominent CDD ridges like the horns on his beloved unicorns. As if that weren’t enough, yarn overs form four-leaf clovers, just like the four-leaf clovers he finds every week (no joke!).

Best of all, you can knit it at flexible gauge and yardage and just go till you run out. This shawl was successfully tested in fingering/sock, sport, and DK yarn, so today’s your lucky day.

What testers had to say:

  • “I love any pattern that lets me use up some of my random stash! It was also easy to fall into a rhythm one the piece was started which made it a relaxing knit for me.”
  • “Liked the meditative in the pattern and how easy it is to change size after my own preferences.”
  • “Obviously since I only had 4 yards of yarn left the directions for section 4 were very accurate! Very well thought out.”
  • “The pattern is beautiful and I can’t wait to make more with this one down the road!”

Skills: knitting and purling flat, increases (Kfb, YO, M1L, M1R), and decreases (K2tog, SSK, CCD). Lace is both charted and written out.

Yarn:
1 color fingering yarn. Recommend at least 100 g/3.5 oz skein. May use different weights or amounts if desired, though this will affect the finished size of the shawl.

Sample shown in Mitchell’s Creations Lagniappe Sock (75% merino, 25% nylon), 463 yds/423 m per 3.53 oz/100 g), colorway Who Said Unicorns Aren’t Real?

Dimensions:
As this shawl is highly adaptable, the finished dimensions will vary with yardage. Sample used 106 g (490 yds/448 m) fingering yarn and measured 54”/137 cm for A (top edge/wingspan), 88/”224 cm for B (bottom edge), and 13.5”/34 cm for C (depth). (See schematic in photos.)

Needles:
US 7/4.5 mm for fingering weight. Use smaller needles for finer yarn and larger needles for thicker yarn to achieve a drapey fabric.

Tools:

  • 4 stitch markers
  • Gram scale to weigh yarn as you go
  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends
  • Blocking mat and wires and/or pins

Sample Blocked Gauge:
For fingering: 18 stitches and 48 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter, using US 7/4.5 mm needles
