A Faroese shawl is a traditional piece of clothing from the Faroe Islands. The most distinguishing characteristics of Faroese shawls is the center back gusset and shoulder shaping which allows the shawl to drape over the shoulders and remain in place as the wearer moves, even if the shawl is not pinned in place. An easy shawl to knit and a real stash buster. Select yarns to create your palette, from dk to sport weight, and choose how you want to put them together. I used 3 dk yarns and 1 sport-weight 2-ply alpaca. If you use a heavier weight, such as worsted, the shawl will turn out much larger and heavy.
The shawl is knit from the bottom up, changing yarns when desired and adding rows of eyelets when the mood suits you. I tend to like balance in my knitting, so eyelet rows were added evenly every 22 rows, but yarn and color was more random for balance of color and texture. The whole shawl is knit every row (garter stitch) so knits up very quickly, I had this done in 2 weeks, but keep in mind that I knit every day. One row of single crochet around the edge finishes the shawl nicely. I wear this shawl around my house in the winter, it brings out my inner goddess. And because of the shaping, it stays on my shoulders without using a shawl pin, allowing me to knit and do other tasks while keeping the thermostat lower during those cold winter months, saving me money.
