Vletta: old Norse for „to wattle“ or „to weave baskets“

The cuff and top edge of these mitts feature a classic basketweave pattern that goes with many styles: silky fibres in feminine colours are as suitable for this design as rustic tweed yarns. While not exactly a beginner pattern, this is the perfect project for you if you like small items to try an interesting combination of techniques!
The pattern combines mosaic knitting with the intarsia technique to create a single-coloured, textured insert that runs through the basketweave. The insert continues as a ribbed stripe along the edge of the hand to provide a good fit. Colours can be reversed or kept the same for both mitts.

Skills required: Knitting and purling flat and in the round over a small circumference, right- and left-leaning increases and decreases, working with slipped stitches to create a mosaic pattern, intarsia in the round.
The pattern includes both a chart and written instructions for the mosaic basketweave and a photo tutorial for the intarsia technique (it’s the technique shown by Donna Druchunas in this video).

Alternative version without intarsia: You like the look of the mosaic cuff - but not the additional challenge of the intarsia technique? A version without the intarsia stripe has been tested for size M, using the chart to work the mosaic repeat around the entire cuff. Notes are included in the pattern to help you with the necessary modifications.
