I designed this shawl pattern highlighting several different lace patterns and elements. Most of the stitches are easy knit stitches, bringing in some elements to refine the look of the lace. Casting on with the double strand knitted method, using Nupp stitch within the lace and joining the two pieces with the Kitchner stitch adds a nice level of expertise.
If you are unfamiliar with any of these stitches, don’t be intimidated! All are very easy. The Nupp stitch is one that takes a little practice to get comfortable with. The Nupp is 3,5 or 7 stitches in one stitch and then on the following row purling those same stitches together. The key is keeping your stitches loose. Then practice… practice… practice! First, start with a 3 stitch Nupp; then work up to a 5 stitch; and finally save the 7 stitch for lace weight yarn. Tutorials are easily found on the internet in addition to most knitting books have great pictorial instructions.
An aspect I really enjoy about lace patterns is the varied end-results that simply come by using different weight yarns and needle sizes. Have something in your stash---give it a try! Use a size or two larger needle than the manufacturer recommends. Wool yarn blocks great, showing off the intricate lace patterns. Cotton works well also, but doesn’t block well… it is how it knits up.
