I grew up in a small ranch town on the Big Island of Hawaii. The nearest movie theater was an hour away whereas some of the nicest beaches on the planet were half that. So, you can probably guess where I chose to spend my time.

White Sandy Beach is a sock pattern written for knitting toe-up socks 2-at-a-time using magic loop. This method is much easier than it seems. It creates two perfectly matching socks with very little effort and eliminates “second sock syndrome” altogether. All the instructions, unless noted, are written for one sock and you should repeat them for the second sock. This means that to complete one round you follow the instructions for needle 1 on sock 1 and then repeat the instructions for needle 1 on sock 2 before moving on to needle 2 instructions for sock 2 and then needle 2 instructions for sock 1. Needle 1 means the top of the foot or front of the leg and needle 2 is the bottom of foot or back of the leg. If you are using 4 double pointed needles (DPNs) needle 1 refers to the first two needles in your round and needle 2 refers to the second two needles in your round.

The pattern is written for three sizes but is easily adjustable by increasing or decreasing your stitch count. The small will fit foot circumferences of about 7 inches, the medium will fit 8 inches and the large will fit 9 inches.

The heel is something that I came up with because although I love the fit of the short row heel I found that most people need a bit more room in that area. The “Deep Pocket Heel” (that’s the name I came up with) is a combination of a short row heel and a bottom of the foot gusset. I have found that it fits everyone I have used it for quite nicely.
