Knit your own Great Horned Owl family! Solomon and Sage, the adult owls, stand 11” tall, not including ear tufts, and measure 20” around the belly. Sophia, the baby owl, stands 6.5” tall, and measures 12.5” around her belly. Solomon has crocheted eyes, and Sage and Sophia have button eyes. Thirteen page pattern with photos.

Two adult Great Horned owls roost in my pine tree for a few months each year. I love seeing, hearing and photographing them. I designed these owls to keep me company when the real ones move to a different location to nest.

Materials:
Yarn:
Adults Solomon and Sage: DK weight (yarn will be used 2 strands together), approx. 60 yds of cream, 190 yds of light gray and 250 yds of dark gray; small amount of DK weight black; 1 yd of worsted yarn for provisional cast on (any color – it will be removed). I chose to use 2 strands of DK together to blend the colors.
Solomon’s eyes: DK weight, small amounts of black and yellow.
Samples used YarnBee Soft and Sleek DK in ivory, linen and mink (114g=478yds); I Love This Yarn Sport in black and yellow.
Baby Sophia: Furry eyelash yarn, approx. 45 yds; 1 yd each of black and dk gray dk yarn for the beak. Sample used Yarn Bee Snuggle Up in mink.
Supplies:
All:
2 Clip-on markers
yarn needle for sewing
Polyfill stuffing
Needles and hook:
All: sz 4 US double points
Solomon and Sage: Needles: sz 2 double points
Solomon: Crochet Hook: sz E
Other materials:
Sage: two 1.5” yellow buttons and two ¾” black buttons (the number of holes on the yellow and black buttons needs to match), black thread to sew them on, and a 2” x 4” piece of black felt
Sophia: two 7/8” yellow buttons and two 5/8” black buttons (the number of holes on the yellow and black buttons needs to match), black thread to sew them on, and a 1.5” x 3” piece of black felt
Sage and Sophia: a sewing needle to sew on the eyes
All, Optional: 3.5oz/100g round bean bag for weighting the bottom of Solomon and Sage (more info in pattern on how to make them with fabric and polypellets); 30g beanbag for Sophia

Gauge: Solomon and Sage: sz 4 needles, 2 strands of dk yarn; stockinette in the round: 22 st. and 30 rows = 4 inches
Sophia: sz 4 needles, furry yarn – the gauge isn’t very important. It’s really hard to count the stitches and rows once they’re knitted.
