If you think Garter Stitch is boring, think again! In this piece, garter stitch is worked in alternate needle sizes for a lovely, wispy summer look. The lightness of the finished fabric allows the poncho to flow along with the summer breeze, just as the colors flow into each other; a result of double stranding the yarn when using the smaller needle size.
Fringes are worked in as you knit your piece, as well as being added on at the end.

Note: The Garter Stitch in this piece is worked with small and a large needle size for what is commonly known as Condo-Knitting. Different rows are knit with different sized needles, creating a unique fabric that is loose and flowing yet stable at the same time. Because of the nature of this stitch, it is difficult to determine an exact gauge. Fortunately it is a poncho, so exact measurements are not necessary. There are photos on the last page of this pattern that show the stitch up close. You will notice some stitches are very large, others are very small. Don’t kill yourself trying to get an exact gauge. Try to get as close to gauge as possible – and be happy!
