For this pouf you will actually start by making your own felted cord to knit with. You make a simple crocheted chain (and lots of it!) and then felt it in the washing machine. So you will need access to a washing machine, plus one or more delicates bags to put the cord inside.

For the knitting needles, I actually like to use a size 36 circular needle. Addi makes these and you can get them from Jimmy Beans Wool.

You can stuff your pouf with upholstery foam to achieve a firm seat (top photo) or fiber fill for a soft, more pillow-like pouf (bottom photo). Instructions are in the pattern.

Once you know how to make the cord, you can use it for other projects, too. It’s about 1/2-inch thick, so very similar to some of the other giant yarns or wool bumps out there now. But I like how it has a very smooth texture. I wasn’t able to find anything like it in stores, so I decided to make it myself!
