Notes

This pattern was my mom’s, and my mittens were always slightly too loose a fabric as a kid, so for warmth (despite the low wool content) I’m going down a needle size to get 22 sts instead of 20.

Tried using math to get the right number of stitches, but it was a little too snug (my swatch was probably off, because I don’t think it’s the pattern), so just use 32 stitches. Therefore use size 7-7.5 for stitch counts and size 5.5 for length.

Switched to 2x2 ribbing, because I hate 1x1 - 20 rnds

Keep increase round

After plain rounds, inc 1 after st 19. Gusset stitches on either side of this, not beside each other (prevents the hold at the base of the thumb). 15 sts for thumb + CO (averaging the sizes to get the odd number needed)

Only 1 CO stitch, both sides, to get back to even numbers.

12 rounds knit then hold sts for thumb, work hand next.

This is where I lost the pattern. (Have since found it, but am knitting both to match.)

12 rounds in hand including cast on stitch.

Shift beg of rnd by 2 sts (1st was switched to later). Work 5 dec rnds, plain rnd after 1st 4.

6 rnds for thumb, k2tog around, finish.
