Notes

Never understood the appeal of this until I saw some finished projects with unstuffed “puffs” and the sides properly seamed. I’m planning on using sock yarn (or other superwash fingering weight wool) scraps -- will probably be years before it’s big enough to actually use.

I haven’t decided yet if I’ll be doing a crochet or mattress stitch seam -- the advantage of the crochet is that I love the look of a solid border around the hexagons, but the disadvantage is that I’d need to buy yarn specifically for the border, which rather defeats the purpose of a blanket to use up scraps. If I opt to mattress stitch it (which I probably will), I’ll use the scraps that are too small for a full hexagon to seam.

Size 5 needles give me a perfectly hexagonal 2.75” hex. I could go up a size and get gauge, but I don’t like my size 6 needle options as well (I’m using magic loop on my size 5 addi turbo with one spare dpn for casting on and binding off instead of using three dpns), and I do like the fabric I’m getting with the size 5s pretty well, so I’m going to stick with this size. --I’ve since switched to three dpns, but I’m still really liking the size 5s.

Hate to do it, but I’m frogging and reusing my yarn for another type of scrap blanket. I haven’t touched this one in months and when I have knit on it, it’s only a few rows at a time -- I’m just not enjoying the knitting in the round on two needles to make the double sided hexagons. I’ve finally concluded that this will never get done, so better to move on than have it hanging around.
