Notes

Cece is about 5 months old in the photo.

When I gave this bonnet to my cousin both of our mothers said there is no way it would ever fit a human, regardless of age. (I thought it looked tiny once I finished it but I have pretty much never seen a baby, so I just went with it.) I was very surprised and happy when I received a photo of Cece wearing it.

The directions for the hat were not as clear as the directions for the cardigan.

The pattern was unclear about whether or not to continue the fan pattern down the back of the bonnet or to work in stockinette:
-Decrease Row 2 (WS): Work across 19 sts, p2tog, leave remaining sts unworked.
-Decrease Row 3 (RS): Work across 19 sts, k2tog, leave remaining sts unworked.
-Rows 4-31: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 14 times.

To me, “work across” implies working in the fan stitch. But in the fan stitch, you only purl every 4th row instead of every other row. So on some of the WS rows you would be knitting across and then doing a k2tog not a p2tog.

Also, the directions say that the last row of the bonnet shaping is a purl row but if you work the back of the bonnet in the fan pattern you actually end on a knit row.

As you work the back of the bonnet, you need to decrease the stitches on either side of the stitch markers you placed at the beginning. It’s just a little detail, but the pattern should have said to remove all the stitch markers except the ones on either side of the center fan panel. Unless you’re supposed to work the back of the bonnet in stockinette, in which case that should have been made clear.

The pattern has you put the center back stitches on a holder but never tells you to break the yarn. It just tells you to pick up stitches around the side of the hat. I don’t know why this bothers me so much. It’s not a big deal and it doesn’t really need to be said, but I think it’s sort of sloppy pattern writing.

I used a 5/8” wide satin ribbon from Hobby Lobby for the bonnet ties. The Materials part of the pattern says you need 30” of ribbon, so I used two 15” pieces of ribbon for the bonnet ties. I cut the exposed end of the ribbon on the diagonal and the hidden end with my pinking shears. I Fray Checked both ends.

Measurements:

  • Ear-to-Ear: 10.5”
  • Depth (Forehead to Back of Head): 5.5”
  • Back of Head Width: 3.5”

Total Cost: $1.35

  • Yarn: $0.36
  • Ribbon: $0.99
