Notes

This took nine years; more off than on.

The Stats & Mods:

  • CO using techknitter’s disappearing loop CO, helpful video tutorial
  • Magic Looping
  • 13-19g of 4ply needed per square; they came out about 6.5”-7.5” per square unblocked
  • superwash yarn with min. 50% wool/alpaca
  • For DK/Sport (Regia 6 ply), I CO 8 sts on 3.5mm and increased to 32 sts which made it roughly the same as the 4 ply ones.
  • Used Slip Stitch Crochet Seam (video) with a 2.5mm/C hook to seam the squares together and the columns.
  • Border: As in pattern, single crochet and slip stitch crochet black
  • Used 54 Squares for 9x6 quilt

What I wished I did:

  • Leave stitches live or on holders to graft together or three needle BO
  • Or use a Stretchier BO like Jeny’s if unable to keep live
  • Block the squares as they are finished
  • Seam the columns as it went
  • Weave in ends as it finished

Square Count: 57;

Used: 54.

Project Diary

17/06/2019: Done! Finished weaving in all the ends. Will wash one more time before taking photos. May not post photos until late in July as I am busy preparing for holiday this week.
27/05/2019: Finished crocheting the border.
23/04/2019: Finished fifth column.
17/04/2019: Finished fourth column.
16/04/2019: Finished third column.
10/04/2019: Finished second column yesterday.
06/04/2019: Finished slip stitch crochet seaming the firt column of squares together. As someone who has only crocheted like one other time, it’s a bit of a learning curve. I also blocked the remaining squares. Working on second column now.
26/03/2019: Recounted a couple times and only have 57 squares. Bought 3.5mm and 2.5mm crochet hooks to try crochet seam. Still debating if I should stick with 6x9 and I’m thinking I probably will now since I only have 57 and don’t want to wait to make 3 more squares. Am going out of town this weekend but will block the 27 others and work on crocheting the first few squares soon.
23/03/2019: Blocking 30 squares now. Debating needing more squares lol. Will seam these columns first but will look for a smaller crochet hook to use maybe.
22/03/2019: Deciding to do 6x9 and blocked a little over three columns worth. Will seam them together next two weeks then move on to the other three columns.
20/03/2019: 58. Over the next couple weeks, I am going to lay it out, maybe block or lightly block it and start the sewing. SO MANY ENDS.
11/03/2019: Working on 55. I intend to finish this as my next project. I still need to figure some things out, but I need to finish this soon!
30/08/2017: 50. I’m working on this again! Yay. I hope to finish it before the end of 2018! I will make more than 56 so I can squares to choose. Furthermore, I may pick up, knit and use three needle bind off instead of seaming. I’ll need more yarn and something or the border too. I’ll be doing 3-4 more squares for this batch before I knit more socks.

For blocking plans: Lay them out, evaluate which to use, block each coloumn at a time. Go from there.

05/09/2013: 46. I haven’t been working on this as much in the last couple of years. As much as I want to make this big, I think I’m going to stop at 56 squares or 8x7. It’s taken me 3 years just to get to 44 and I don’t knit as much as socks these days. I’ll be glad when it’s finished. I’ll be working on at least 3 more squares in the next week or so.
13/09/2011: 39. I did two from Regia 6 ply. I thought that with the hexipuff quilt, I would be sick of this; however, I still like this quilt but it’s going far slower than I would like.
03/06/2011: 32. As I haven’t been making so many socks this year, been working on this less.
05/10/2010: 27. This is taking forever. Haha.
03/09/2010: 21. Two more while watching Mad Men.
12/08/2010: 19. Finally caught up, took me over a week to do 8.
09/03/2010: 9. Won’t be able to catch up before my trip, but I’ve done 5 recently and probably won’t do any for awhile. Each sock yarn is different and creates squares of varying thickness, drape, and weight. Some notes: The Jawoll Red knit until 41sts only. The DIC Gothic Rose was knit one rnd less before BO, but still had to use brown waste yarn for half of BO.
06/02/2010: 4. Did one this past week. Put some photos up today.
27/01/2010: Total Squares: 3. Long journey ahead.
23-4/01/2010: First square CO and finished.

This will be a long term knit because I want a big enough blanket to cover at least myself (i 7256 squares seems to be the goal now). I hate to seam and I barely know how to single crochet, but this project has inspired me. This may take years, but I do buy more sock yarn and want to knit more socks for this great project.
