I’d made mom a watch-cap type hat with “thrum” stuffing and a knitted lining, but her ears got cold.
Total project cost with tax: $101.38
Photos: Top- outside; Second, lining; Third, closeup of earflap lining pattern and nametag; Bottom, closeup of fair isle outside. Earflap braid bottoms do not show in the photos, but they match the tassel in the top photo.
I bought a peruvian cap for myself which I used as a size model.
This is really 3 layers of hat in one. I began by knitting the complete inner lining top-down (striping to allevieate boredom), then the earflap lining (salt and pepper fair isle), then the fair isle outside with patterns I graphed myself. As I worked my way up, I added unspun fleece between the two layers with a yarn needle and crochet hook. It’s like wearing a pillow. Mom looks like a conehead with this one, but all I say is she looks Tres Francais.
The graph was from an experiment in in creating an omnidirectional pattern that morphed as one knit upward from darker to lighter. I want a cardigan of this. The peerie at the bottom is repeated several times around the crown as it was good for masking decreases.
If the weather is above 22 degrees, it’s too hot to wear this cap, but mom loves to do so anyway.
