After my first fair isle project many years ago (more than I care to think about), I was hooked. One aspect of fair isle knitting that I find so appealing is the ability to blend colors to create a truer reproduction of the colors that I see in nature. These four designs of hat and mittens were inspired by some of the autumn colors of western Montana.

Cable, Montana is a ghost town now. It might not have been born at all if not for three prospectors who bedded down for the night. They woke the next morning to find that their horses had wandered off. In the search to find them, they came upon a vertical pillar of quartz that extended down about 1,000 feet. They called their discovery the Atlantic Cable Lode, a tribute to the laying of the transoceanic cable, and the town was born.

Winter in Montana can be snowy and dark…which makes it the perfect place to have an old fashioned Christmas, with whimsical stockings hung on the mantle and images of old Kris Kringle coming to fill them with gifts of joy and love.

Winters in Montana can be quite chilly it is always good to have a little something underneath your coat or around your neck to help ward off the nippy weather. These scarves and shawls are designed to be versatile, able to be worn under a coat or as an accessorizing layer around the office or at a party.

Pattern contains directions for each of the three New Year’s Balls.

Yarn

New for 2012-2013! There will be two sets of instructions for each square, one for knitting the afghan square-by-square and another for knitting the afghan in strips. Be sure to follow the instructions for the method that you have chosen.

Pop the top off these mittens to get out yarn, keys, or hold your sweetheart’s hand.

General Instructions

All squares are worked back and forth on size 6 (4.0mm) needles. Each square begins with 5 rows of seed stitch. These rows are not counted as part of the pattern or chart. The patterns are then knitted over the center stitches with the first and last 5 sts always worked in seed stitch. Most of the squares are worked over 80 total sts, increasing...

Finished Size

All of the squares for this afghan will be taken down at the end of July 2012. At that time the afghan will be offered for sale in it entirety for $12.00. It will be SA-04-Sampler Aran Afghan.
