06 Cable Cut Out
A striking yet wearable design featuring elegant cables and an open back detail – a fresh take on modern knitwear for advanced beginners and mindful makers.
The 06 Cable Cut Out Top is a fitted, contemporary piece worked from the top down in a flowing cable pattern, with a subtle cut-out at the back finished with a neat i-cord tie. Designed to be both eye-catching and versatile, it blends timeless techniques with a minimalist, fashion-forward silhouette.
To begin, the upper back and shoulders are worked first by casting on at the back neck using the long-tail cast-on method. Increases shape the shoulders gradually to their full width. Stitches are then picked up to form the front shoulders, and the neckline is shaped and joined using the backwards loop cast-on.
The front and back are worked flat to the base of the armhole, then joined to work in the round. If a longer top is desired, extra cable pattern repeats can be added before beginning the waist shaping. A decorative cable runs down each side to mimic side seams, while subtle shaping contours the body. At the same time, the open back cut-out is worked seamlessly into the design.
To finish, stitches are picked up around the cut-out opening and framed with a clean i-cord edging. Matching i-cord ties are sewn to the inside corners, completing the look with a polished detail. The result is a thoughtful, wearable piece that brings a modern edge to any handmade wardrobe.
Note: After test knitting, more length was added to the armhole which increases the overall length of the garment, meaning the Cut Out sits a little lower on the back.
