12 Shaped Sweater
DESCRIPTION
The 12 Shaped Sweater is an elegant crew neck sweater with compound raglan shaping. The sweater has an oversized fit with a deep twisted neckband, and it features thoughtfully placed increases and decreases to create detailed shaping on the body and sleeves. It is designed to be worn with approx. 23 cm/9” positive ease, creating a relaxed look with the option to add a subtle curve to the back hem.
To begin, stitches are cast on for the top of the sleeves and back, and the raglan is increased while the front neck is shaped. The neck is joined and the compound raglan shaping continues which allows for a more flattering fit because the rate of increase varies to follow the shape of the body more accurately. It increases more rapidly between the neck and shoulders and at the end to curve around the underarm, but more gradually in the section in between.
Once the yoke is complete, the sleeves are split from the body. The sleeve stitches are held while the body is worked in the round to the hem. Thoughtfully placed increase and decrease stitches create a ‘V’ channel on the back and mock forward side seams on the front. Once the body length is complete, a curved hem can be added if desired by working German Short Rows to build the length of the back hem before the twisted rib hem is added.
The sleeves are shaped using the same decrease method on the overarm to create a voluminous shape and are finished with a twisted rib cuff to match the body.
To finish, stitches are picked up around the neck and worked in twisted rib. The band is folded and sewn down, and voila! you have completed your 12 Shaped Sweater.
