2 Layer Hat by Deborah Kahn

2 Layer Hat

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

This loom knit hat is worked with 2 yarns: an inner yarn which creates a sort of lining and an outer yarn which is mainly visible as lines or ribs running up the outside of the hat.

It can be made with a wide variety of yarns. It works best if there is a contrast in color or texture or both between the 2 yarns.

I’ve also made it on a variety of looms with a varied number of pegs. The hat will come out denser than the equivalent loom knit because of the 2 over 1 technique.

I usually finish the top on needles, since I am an ambidextrous (looms or needles) knitter, but I’ll provide instructions for finishing the top on a loom or finishing the top on a Flexee Loom, where pegs can be removed for decreasing.

Casting on: Use your favorite cast on that is reasonably stretchy. I like a crochet cast on. Cast on using the outer yarn.

Knitting: Join the second yarn and wrap 7 pegs, then use the outer yarn to wrap the same 7 pegs. You will have 3 loops on each peg. Use the tool to move the lower 2 loops over the top loop. Continue until you have reached a length that will work for the recipient, allowing 2 to 2.5 inches for the crown.

Crown: Decrease in your preferred technique. On needles I’ve been working garter stitch in the inner yarn, carrying the outer yarn behind and using it to create a contrast yarn for the decrease. (See picture)

Finishing: Cut the yarns, run the end through the remaining stitches and pull tight. 8-12 stitches is a reasonable ending point. Leave the end on the outside of the hat. Measure out 24” lengths of both yarns, the quantity depends on how thick a braid you want and the length on how long a braid you want. Fold your braid yarn in half, take your end yarn and pass it over the middle of the braid and then run it inside the hat and weave it in very thoroughly so the braid stays attached. Braid the yarns, wrap the end tightly and cut the ends evenly to make an attractive tassle.

Will add further instructions for finishing the top.
