Pattern is inspired by the knitted 1898 Hat, and was designed for a charity workshop benefiting Seafarer’s Friend in Chelsea, MA.

There are two versions of this hat, one is worked bottom-up, as the knitted hat is made, and the other is top-down. In the bottom-up version, the headband/earflaps are worked flat, from side to side in single crochet back loop only ribbing. Then the band is seamed and folded in half, and the crown of the hat is worked into the row ends, seamlessly, in the round. In the top-down version, after the crown is completed, the ribbing is worked JAYGo, seamed, folded up inside the hat, and hemmed.

As designed, the hat is about 19” in circumference, but has a good amount of stretch, so will fit heads of a variety of sizes. It’s designed to be about 9” in height, from top of the crown to the bottom of the hat (not including the earflaps). If you want a taller hat, just add some rounds before starting your decreases.

Please honor my copyright on this pattern and do not claim my work as your own. And please make at least one hat from this pattern for a charity, as the pattern was designed for a charity project, and is distributed free of charge.

Feedback is always welcome!

Errata:

Too funny -- it was just pointed out to me that in the Top-Down version of this pattern, I’ve typed “Hat Crows” in the pattern instead of “Hat Crown”… Please don’t let that confuse you -- there are no birds of any type involved in crocheting this hat, it should read “Crown”!
