By the end of the thirties the fashions of the rich and the working classes were being brought closer together. There were numerous factors contributing to this greater homogeneity; the increased efficiency of mass production made high style easy to obtain and less expensive; movies and newsreels speeded the absorption of trends; and, there was the shared experience of the Great Depression and the coming of World War II, resulting in general conservatism.

Hollywood and its stars became a major influence on fashion as fantasy became more important in a troubled world. Even far from a major city one could emulate a favorite star through the convenience of mail order! Sears Roebuck’s offerings ranged from “Autographed Fashions” to “Constance Bennet’s Beauty Aids.”

The instructions for this knitted shell are included in Folkwear Pattern #236--Sophisticated Lady Suit to Sew & Shell to Knit.

They are also available separately as “K236 Basketweave Shell”.

The knitted shell has a round neck and cap sleeves in a basketweave stitch. It can be worn under the jacket or just with the skirt for a more casual look.
