This scarf / tie is an ode to the Carnation Revolution that happened on April 25, 1974 when a peaceful transition into democracy occurred in Portugal. Carnations were put into the gun barrels of the soldiers! To celebrate ‘Dia da Liberdade’ (Freedom Day), red carnations or ‘cravos’ are donned to honor the occasion.

The scarf gives the appearance of stems with flowers at the ends. It’s up to you as to how many flowers, how spaced out the ‘stems’ are and how long you choose to make it. You can even do single flowers on each end of an I-Cord for a string tie look!

You also have the option to make a more generic flower. A potential stash-buster moment, the flowers can be made as a stand-alone to wear as a pin or even displayed as a bouquet (shown here using a wooden knitting needle)!

A third option is to make a calla lily scarf. This pattern is a separate PDF, included in your purchase.

Yardage for Carnations or Generic Flowers: 15 yds / 14 m each. They are made flat and swirled into a funnel to complete the flower.

Scarf yardage: Depends upon your width and length. For the scarf shown with 7 ‘stems’, 1 dropped stitch between stems: 278 yds / 255 m were used.
