A group of butterflies is called a “Kaleidoscope.” Since this shawl incorporates several different butterfly motifs, it has become a Kaleidoscope of Butterflies.

The shawl is knit from the bottom up. Decreases occur in the body of the shawl as the motifs change and finally ends with short rows to make the crescent shape. The edging is an original stitch pattern and includes an eyelet butterfly motif. Six cheerful butterfly motifs can be found within the shawl. A slip stitch butterfly pattern, using a CC, will flit between each of the other motifs. The border features a butterfly on a seed and reverse stockinette stitch background using twisted stitches and two colors of beads, which were inspired by the colors of the female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. If you wish you may use just one color of beads. The body of the shawl features small butterflies in an allover pattern. After the final slip stitch butterfly rows, the short row shaping begins. There are no wraps and turns or German short rows used here. Instead, the method is similar to that used when making the heel of a sock. A one-time butterfly motif is featured in the center of the crescent shaping section amidst an array of small butterflies. Finally, a garter stitch edge tops the shawl. Beads were used to accent the butterfly.

Charts with no beads are included at the end so you may make your own bead placement.

The pattern is written for lace weight yarn and is only one size. Fingering weight might also be used, which will result in a larger shawl.

Yarns: 875 to 1000 yards of lace weight for Main Color. 150-200 yards lace weight for Contrasting Color.
Beads: A total of 1219 size 8/0 seed beads used. 673 for the main bead and 546 for the contrasting bead. Knitter may choose to use all one color and even use fewer beads.
