Aariah Waves
This is my first pattern design! I couldn’t create the bigger waves I wanted with just a few feather and fan type rows, so there are some short-rows in this design to make the “waves” show more.
Wanting to have the largest shawl possible from my 2 skeins of luxury yarn, I used a larger needle with this (US11 for the body), the yarn bloomed great, and I’m very happy with the resulting fabric!
This is top-down, with lots of stockinette stitch, a little bit of short-rows, and some “wave” rows and a border, with the option of using a contrast-color yarn.
To start there’s a choice between a straight top-edge, with a low cast-on, or a more curved or fitted top-edge, thats designed to start by creating a moderate-length garter tab.
The magenta-multi and gold example pictured was knitted in size medium with less than two skeins of Malabrigo Rios (a worsted-weight yarn) (there’s 130g or about 280yds of Malabrigo Rios in the color “Piedras”, and 46g/107yds of Berroco Vintage in the color “Cork” for the contrast color and border). So, all in all, that example contains about 175g or 390yds total of worsted weight yarn, and it was created with a us10.5 needle for the garter tab curved-beginning, and a US11 needle for the entire body of the shawl / wrap.
The blue-green example was knitted (in a guage of 17sts = 4” in stockinette stitch) in size large with a dk or lighter worsted-weight yarn for the main color (Queensland Collection Rustic Tweed, color 903 (the label says dk, but it did bloom very nicely, so I definitely see why it is sometimes called a worsted weight) in the amount of 117g or about 326 yds was used (for the main color)) with a US8 needle. The best-matching contrast color I could obtain at the time (Cascade 220 (in the color “Duck Egg Blue”)) is a slightly heavier yarn, so in this example a smaller needle (US6) was used for the contrast color areas. The amount of Cascade 220 used for the contrast color was 59g or about 130yds. So, all in all, this example contains 176g or about 456yds of yarn. The yarns in this one bloomed very nicely, so if I had gone up a needle size for everything on this, I’d probably still be equally happy with the finished piece.
