ADVANTAGEOUS:
This started out as an idea for a sampler shawl of interesting shape to accompany a 2022 Yarn Advent (12 x 20g. fingering) put out by a friend and dyer, UP North Yarns. My first sample was made with minis from another dyer HauteKnit Yarns. I am also sampling it in more solid yarns in ½ skeins (50g) from Urth Yarns. This is a fun sampler with a number of different stitch techniques, including slipped stitch, mosaic, short row, cable, bobbles, bubbles & more. It would be a great “stash” buster or “ends user upper” and fun knit-a-long project. It includes a number of techniques people might like to try out. No section is prohibitively long, (not too many rows) so a technique you might not love should be a short-lived experience, rather than a large commitment! This allows you to dip your toes into many things, some new, some old.
YARN:
The design is meant to be worked in fingering weight yarn. I also think this would be a fun project in different weights too. If changing up the yarn, you will need to estimate yardage & I would suggest using a needle size recommended on the yarn ball band, or one size larger.
NEEDLES & GAUGE:
US 4 / 3.5 mm needles. The project is never VERY wide, so you can use 34” or 32” cables on your round needles and it should work well. I used a longer cable, as it was handy – and found it a bit annoying, as it was too long!

GAUGE uses US 4 / 3.5 mm in GARTER, after gentle blocking.
should be VERY close to your pre-block.
24 Sts to 4” & 40 Rows to 4”

Since this item is not fitted, exact gauge relates to not running out of yarn. I tend to knit on the tighter side. If you knit loosely and do not want to check gauge, use a smaller needle. Conversely, if you knit on the tighter side, you may use the same as me. In either instance, I suggest measuring gauge in process in the beginning to see if you are close to my gauge. (aka “Not Swatching”) Gauge is measured in the GARTER Start, after blocking. The garter is not pulled open, so the row count is very high (rows are compressed). The stitches contained in the sampler are VERY varied and everyone’s gauge will eat up different amounts of yarn in different sections! There should be enough yarn left over, so everyone will have enough yarn to finish, even if they need to flex the exact color placements a wee bit.
SIZE:
With a gentle shape & block is about 25” (63.5 cm) Wide at widest & 85” (216 cm) Long from tip to tip.
NOTIONS:
A yarn sewing needle or crochet hook for tucking in ends. Markers, some removable.
