Alpine Journey Hat
Construction is bottom up, worked in the round.
There are 2 brim options: folded and unfolded
There are 2 body options: beanie and slouchy
Sizes
1 (2, 3, 4, 5)
To fit: Baby (Toddler, Youth, Adult Small, Adult
Large) with a recommended -5 to -7”/ -13 to -18 cm
of ease
Both samples are size 5 (Adult Large) made for
a 23”/ 58 cm head.
There is a significant amount of recommended
negative ease because the resulting fabric has
stretch and drape. Yarn substitutions may result in
a fabric that does not require as much negative
ease.
Finished Measurements
Unstretched Brim Circumference:

Suggested Yarn
North Bay Fiber, Journey
(100% Romney wool; 175yd / 159m per 100 g)
Unfolded brim, beanie or slouchy: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1(see note 1))
skein(s)
Folded brim, beanie or slouchy: 1 (1, 1, 2(see note 2), 2)
skein(s)
Note 1: I used every bit of 1 skein for the large, unfolded,
slouchy version so if that makes you nervous, you
may want an extra skein. See yardage estimates.
Note 2: You might be able to get away with 1 skein for
the adult small, folded brim, beanie version. See
yardage estimates.
Needles and Notions
Needle size required to achieve gauge.
Sample used US 7 / 4.5 mm circular knitting
needles with a 32” / 81 cm length for magic loop.
Stitch markers: one unique marker for beginning of
round and 2 additional markers
Darning needle
Cable needle
Pom pom (optional)
Gauge
26 stitches x 28 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in half twisted
rib, worked in the round, blocked
Ribbing is worked to a distance, so row gauge is
not important for the brim. A difference in row
gauge in the body can be accounted for by working
less or more cable repeats, however this may affect
yardage requirements.
