This shawl is a rectangle. The shawl is knit end to end with a border of seed stitch. The length can be altered by changing the number of times you work Charts 2 and 3. The width can be altered by changing the number of times you work the blue repeats.

For the design of this shawl, I wanted to use a rose motif designed by Herbert Niebling. The motif was in a pattern called Johannisrose and here is where I ran into problems. While a photograph was shown in the set of reprints Spitzenstrickerei 1: Historische Muster (page 10), it turned out that the pattern chart was not included. I did my best to recreate the rose motif from the photograph. Since it did not have sufficient detail to see such things as the placement of decreases, it is hard to tell how accurate the recreation is. I hope Mr. Niebling would not be appalled by my version. I also used this motif in my Rose Dance Shawl pattern.

Warning - the pattern has not been test knitted by anyone other than myself so there may be errors. Please let me know if you find any and I will post a corrected version. Please make sure you have the most recent version. Thanks.
