This pattern is dedicated to the memory of Nicolas Duarte, Mr Hipstrings. You might also know him as the Spinning T-Rex who could be found spinning outside the Hipstrings booth at Maryland Sheep and Wool.

His obituary is here and includes a link for donating to a college fund for his lovely kids Gab, Adrien, and Christopher.

Nik was an amazing, kind, and creative person who loved a challenge including in his knitting. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and a love for dad jokes. In the small amount of time I got to hang out with him, it was clear he loved helping people solve problems and that he loved teaching. I was lucky enough to be at his SSK seminar on Spinning as a T-Tex. It was a hoot and he covered a lot of problems and their solutions while keeping me giggling.

Perhaps this pattern will challenge you to try lace knitting.

The Nicolas Shawl is triangular and knit from the top down with increases on every right-side row, worked at the edges and each side of the center stitch.

I used a handspun yarn made from a blend of Rambouillet (80%) and Tussah silk (20%) from Hipstrings in the Never Going to Give You Up colorway.

Warning - the pattern has not been test knitted by anyone other than myself so there may be errors. Please let me know if you find any and I will post a corrected version. Please make sure you have the most recent version. Thanks.
