Anita’s Granny Square
While sorting through an old small paper jewelry box that belonged to my Aunt Anita, I stumbled upon a tiny, yellowed piece of paper tucked under the cotton insert—her handwritten notes for a four-round granny square!
It’s not quite the classic square I first learned to crochet, but it’s got its own charm—and I couldn’t keep this little heirloom to myself. I’ve transcribed, lightly edited, and finished the instructions while preserving the original spirit of her notes.
This pattern is simple, sweet, and open to interpretation. It’s perfect for using up scraps, experimenting with color, or stitching a little something in honor of the people who made us love making. Her note is posted on my blog if you’d like a free view of this pattern.
Choose your own adventure with any yarn weight and hook that works well for that fiber choice. I used Malabrigo Rios and a US Size H/8 (5mm) hook for the pictured sample, but work the block up as you wish!
I’ve transcribed the pattern and included a chart in the PDF. The PDF also includes instructions for a zigzag slip stitch join, link to a continuous granny square join, and link to edging inspiration.
Thank you, Aunt Anita, for this sweet little moment  I love you forever.
And I am honored to share this sweet little memory with crocheters everywhere. Enjoy!
