NEEDLES
• 4.5mm / US 7 40cm / 16 inch circular needle, AND needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round.
• 3.25mm / US 4 40cm / 16 inch needles, any style for making the button cover (2 DPNs recommended. Short circular or straight needles would work as well)
• Crochet hook in approximately size 4.5mm for crochet provisional cast-on
• Spare 40cm / 16 inch circular needle in size 4.5mm / US 7 or smaller for joining brim
Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.
GAUGE (after blocking)
18 stitches and 28 rounds = 10cm / 4 inches on 4.5mm / US 7 needles in Stockinette stitch
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
NOTIONS
• Smooth waste yarn for crochet provisional cast-on
• 6 stitch markers, one being unique to mark beginning of round
• Yarn needle
• 1 button, approximately 15mm / ½ inch diameter
• Flat sewing elastic (often used for waistbands, etc), approximately 2.5- 5cm / 1- 2 inches in width, and 47 (51, 54)cm / 18½ (20, 21¼) inches in length (optional, see NOTES)
NOTES
~ Cap is worked from the bottom up beginning with a provisional cast on. First, the brim is worked in the round, and then is folded in half to create a double layered brim. The crown is then shaped with decreases.
~ A covered button is sewn to the centre of the cap crown simply for decoration. It is optional, but recommended to give this hat a unique detail.
~ This cap is meant to be worn just above the ears. Choose a size that is slightly smaller than your head circumference.
~ The pattern includes the option of inserting a piece of flat sewing elastic into the brim of the cap to keep it snug against the head and prevent it from stretching out over time. For this purpose, choose a lightweight sewing elastic such as a knitted or braided type with a lot of stretch, that is about 3-4cm / 1¼-1½ inches in width. Woven or non-roll elastic have not been tested with this design and are not recommended.
