As a serious yarn collector, I inevitably end up with those orphan skeins of luxury yarn, either gifted to me or purchased while on vacation (better than a dumb t-shirt, amiright??). Of course, when I get home, I am usually stumped for a project that uses just 1 skein while still playing up the qualities of that expensive luxury fiber.

So…this slim, elegant scarf was born. This little scarf is a sophisticated neck wrap suitable for looping around once or twice and then nestling smoothly under your coat or jacket collar. The luxury fiber feels divine on your skin and the light weight of this scarf makes it perfect to layer without bulk. The modern lacy pattern repeats to make the front door and many windows of a high-rise apartment building with a flat base and a gabled roof to complete the architectural shape. The garter stitch background and the lace patterns themselves both contribute to a reversible appearance that is almost identical on either side.

Knit this as a gift for that urbane downtown friend using fingering yarn that has some cashmere or baby alpaca or silk or…well, you get the idea. Lighter colors and only subtly variegated yarn would be the best choice. Heavily variegated or speckled yarn will obscure the pattern. Note: this pattern employs a lot of purling for the reverse garter stitch that makes up the background or walls of the apartment.
