Named after mathematician Emil Artin (who studied objects called “braid groups”), this warm hat focuses on cable knitting with scattered decorative wrapped stitches.

Links are given in the pattern to assist with the cast on (if desired) and the wrapped stitches. Where appropriate, instructions are both written and charted.

Sizes: Child (Adult)
Because of the nature of cables and ribbing, this hat can have quite a bit of stretch. So even though the pattern is only written in two sizes, both sizes are able to fit a large range of ages and head sizes. The notes in the pattern give some information about what you can do if you need to adjust the size by just a bit.

Yarn and Yardage:
Worsted weight: 140 (200) yards / 130 (185) meters

You can hold DK weight together with a lace mohair to achieve a worsted weight that is wonderfully fuzzy!

Needles and Notions:
US 5, 16” circular needles (for Adult) or DPNs
US 5, DPNs for crown (or longer circular if using Magic Loop)
Cable needle
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle

For the Child size, use DPNs, magic loop, or smaller circumference circular needles (10”), still in US 5 size

Techniques Used
Long-tail tubular cast on for 2x2 ribbing (suggested; see the tutorial from Purl Soho)
Cable knitting
Wrapped Stitches (more details from Knotions)

Enjoy knitting!
