Avery’s Answer is a Hat-Hood-Scarf Combination for young active girls ( or boys) that love the outdoors.
The design was created when I was made aware that several schools in our area to not allow the students to wear scarves on the playground. It seems that scarves get caught in the slides and awings and can cause strangulation.
With this in mind I decided to design a warm hat-hood- scarf combination that eliminates the need for a scarf around the neck.
The hood is form-fitting to the head of the child and the facial opening is as small as can be in order that it covers most of the forehead. The scarf section lays flat on the shoulders under the coat and is not bulky or heavy. It does, however, prevent the cold air from reaching the neck- thus creating warmth.
To add pizzazz I topped Avery’s Answer with two large pompoms.
I used Red Heart Gumdrop yarn (4) for this design but any worsted soft yarn is suitable. Gumdrop gave me the bright Grape and Cherry colours that are so popular with the younger generation this year, so it was a suitable variegated yarn for Avery and her sister.
Of course you can choose the yarn to compliment your child’s taste but be sure it is a soft subtle worsted for best results.
This entire hat-hood-scarf combination is knit in the round with no seams. The pattern is written for two sizes: S- for head circumference of 18-20” and L- for head circumference of 21-23”.

BONUS: I have included a bonus pattern for mittens to match. The mittens are knit on two needles with a seam down the side. These are also available in two sizes.
