The Barbro Wristlets are inspired by a great character in the book The Growth of the Soil. Barbro is grows up in town, moves to the city and gets a taste of the outside world before moving back to the wilds and finding a husband. She is resentful that her life has turned out this way and doesn’t fully settle into her life as a farmer’s wife. This book is full of interesting commentary about the opportunities afforded to women at the turn of the last century. Barbro is a complicated character, and I don’t think you’re supposed to like her an awful lot.

The one thing she enjoys is playing guitar, so I designed these fingerless mitts in her honor.

These mitts make the most of a single ball of yarn. Worked in a clever sedge/reverse sedge stitch, the mitts are worked mostly in joined rows with no turning required. They will keep your arms and hands warm as you crochet, collect stones, or play guitar.
