Bas Relief
Bas-Relief is a term for a type of sculpture where the projection from the supporting background is shallow. The twisted stitch pattern in this pullover reminds me of this type of art. I felt as if I was translating a traditional colourwork pattern of zigzags and diamonds into texture. Twisted stitches really pop out from a background of stockinette, so they were perfect for creating this knitted ‘sculpture’.

Bas-Relief is knit from the top down with compound raglans. The garment is knit flat while the front neckline is being shaped, and transitions to being knit in the round once the front neckline is joined. The chart for the textured stitch pattern is centered on the front and back, and the sleeve stitches are worked in plain stockinette. The sleeve stitches are put on hold while the body is worked to tunic length with A-line shaping. The sleeve stitches are taken off hold and worked from the underarm down to just short of the cuff, where a small cable chart is worked to transition to the cuff ribbing. The collar is picked up from the neckline, and worked upward.
