Needles

• For Newborn, Baby and Toddler Size Only US Size 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) or use a 40” / 100 cm length or longer circular for magic loop method. (see right for explanation on magic loop)
• For Kid, Adult Small and Adult Large Only US Size 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm), 16” / 40 cm circular knitting needle and US Size 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles or use a 40” / 100 cm length or longer circular for magic loop method. (see right for explanation on magic loop)

Gauge
Testers for this hat used a wide range of needle sizes to achieve gauge. Because everyone’s tension is unique, it is highly recommended to start with the suggested needle sizes listed below and adjust up or down as needed. Note that stitch gauge is more important than round gauge for this design. Measuring ribbing can be tricky, so focus on getting as close as possible to the target numbers—the natural stretch of the ribbed fabric will easily take care of the rest!
26 sts, 41 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in 1x1 Rib worked in the round on US Size 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needle moderately stretched. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
43 sts, 41 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in 1x1 Rib worked in the round on US Size 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needle unstretched. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
