One size fits most for the Basil Hood! This weirdly cute project combines the best of a balaclava with the looser fit of a hood.It has some pretty nice finishing details, and features cozy garter stitch. You can knit it in scraps, like the sample shown, or all in one color for a more subdued look.
This light hood works up fast in scraps of fingering-weight yarn. It features a couple of interesting construction quirks to keep you engaged, and has a good result—both wearable and striking. Scraps and self-striping yarns will feature well with the multidirectional knitting, and you also use matching yarns to avoid the bold structural emphasis and colorblocking if you want.
Materials:
- 290-380yds of fingering-weight yarn scraps; sample shown is Malabrigo Yarn Sock, Malabrigo Yarn Mechita,Hedgehog Fibers Oh So Fine Merino, and Cascade Heritage Sock
- one 16-24” circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge, used to work flat (you’ll never need the needle to be hat-circumference-length; it’s all flat, actually)
- stitch marker
- tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- smooth scrap yarn for provisional crochet cast-on
- crochet hook, size F/3.75mm or size suited to yarn
- spare DPN in size needed for gauge, or close, for use as a working stitch holder
Gauge:
Gauge is 24 sts and 52 rows over 4”/10cm of moderately blocked garter stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge.
Measurements:
As shown, this hood is about 13.5”/34cm deep from crown to hem, and 10.5”/27cm across the neck opening, measured flat. It’s about 21”/53cm circumference, but has considerable stretch.
