Corrections and Additions to the Pattern:

This is a Top Down Pattern.

Creating A Space for the Heel:

This is done by knitting half of one row of the sock (15 stitches) in another contrasting color yarn. This results in stitches on either side of the back half of the sock attached to the dummy yarn which will later be picked up and knit to make the heel.

I started this half row 8 stitches before the point where the sock originally joined together at the top so that the join at the top of the sock and the heel would be centered in the back.

There are a couple of options about where to start knitting the first original color row. In either case, it is necessary to cut the yarn before you start knitting so that there will be space to add the heel later. One approach to adding the yarn is to pick it up at the end of the dummy stitches you just added and continue knitting first the original color stitches and then the dummy color stitches. Another approach is to start knitting at the stitch directly below the dummy yarn stitch which is attached to the stitch that would have been knitted next if you hadn’t added the dummy yarn.

Adding The Heel:

When you’re ready to knit the heel, you then pick up (don’t knit them yet) all the stitches of the original yarn on one needle from the rows above the dummy yarn and on another needle below the dummy yarn. There should be 15 stitches on each needle. At this point you remove the dummy yarn. Before you remove the dummy yarn make sure to check the stitches at both ends of the dummy yarn to be sure that they are attached to your needles.

The next step is to transfer a few of the stitches from each needle to a third needle so you can knit in the round. You then start knitting the heel as described in the pattern.

Correction to the Heel Decreases:

All the decrease rows in the Heel should start with K2Tog instead of K2.
