Slip stitch, chain 1 and chain 2 in the beginning or in the end of row or round do not count as a stitch.

Stiches Used and Abbreviations: (US terms)

ch - chain

st - stitch

hdc - half double crochet

hdc2tog - hdc two together

dc - double crochet

sl st - slop stitch

sk X - skip X stitches

stich name X, where X is a number - it means working the stich over the next X stitches, e.g. dc 2 means working dc in the next 2 stitches (stitches repeat)

Special Stitches:

BS - bead stitch - dc in next 2 (2 dc over 2 stitches), now working sideways over the two dc: yarn over, insert the hook before the first dc, yarn over and pull up a loop the 2 stitches, you have now 3 loops on the hook, yarn over, pull over a loop over the same 2 stitches, now you have 5 loops on the hook, once more time: yarn over, pull up a loop over the 2 stitches sideways, now you have 7 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.
Note: If you are using a thicker yarn than suggested then you may do the regular bead stitch instead.

BS2tog - decreasing bead stitch - it is the same as the bead stitch but the two dc are not consecutive; you are working over 4 stitches from the previous row - dc in next stitch, skip one stitch, dc in next stitch - now you have 2 dc and you make the bead over these two dc stitches, skip the next stitch

Other techniques you will need:

Working in the third loop.

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail and pull it through all stitches to close the hat. Pull the loop though the all stitches once more time to secure the hat closing. Fasten up. Wave in the ends.

Attach the pompon.

Your hat is now ready.
