Beeton's Sleeping Sock I
This is a knit-flat version of the stitch pattern Isabella Beeton used for her 1870 “Sleeping Sock” pattern. Like many Victorian patterns, there’s no information on gauge, needle size, etc. for making the socks. I converted Beeton’s pattern of 8 rounds to 12 rows. There are only 2 rows that take extra effort; the other 10 rows are either knit across or purl across.
The pattern has a multiple of 4 stitches. I added 3 selvage stitches to center the stitch pattern. The advantage of this colorwork pattern is only one color of yarn is used per row. Some knitters might prefer this technique over stranding as Beeton’s method uses much less yarn.
This pattern could be used as an allover pattern or as a horizontal accent.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, k2tog, knitting a purl bump from 5 rows below and bind off.
See note for special stitch instructions.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
Yardage needed will depend on your project.
