This pattern is written for teaching a class of “Beginner Brioche in the round.”
So this pattern includes step by step photo tutorials to help you to understand both Brioche Knit and Purl stitches.
The photo tutorials also show with both English style and Continental style.

Using 2 colors and knitting in the round is the best way to learn Brioche knitting. If you are thinking about making Brioche shawls, hats… I recommend knitting this cowl first.

YARN
Any worsted weight yarn works.
I recommend to use a smoother, lighter color yarn for your first project.
You can knit this cowl with all one color, but 2 contrasted color yarns make it easier to understand Brioche knitting.

MC - 85 yards
CC -75 yards

NEEDLES
Because of the Yarn Overs you will create for Brioche knitting, you use 1~2 sizes smaller needles than normal knitting.

Suggested size - US #5, 16” long circular needles.

SIZE
The yardage above is for 22” circumference and 5.5” tall.
It is very easy to make it taller, longer or with different gauge of the yarn.
Please note that you need to adjust the yardage if you change the size.
The sample of first 2 photos is knitted 6” from CO instead of 5”. Finished cowl is 6.5” tall.

  • If you prefer to make this cowl taller, you just simply keep working Brioche sts until your desired height.
  • If you prefer to make it longer, please add a multiple of 3 sts.
  • If you prefer to use bigger or smaller yarn, please subtract or add a multiple of 3 sts.
