This design was created to highlight the beauty of the newest yarn - Tweedy by Hedgehog Fibers and Madelinetosh.

Like a delicious layered dessert, Berry Trifle Cowl features a variety of textures brought together in a one-skein project. Layer by layer, explore different stitch patterns in a classic “just one more row” kind of a knit. The cowl is compact and lightweight but at the same time cozy. It’s of a comfortable size to wear both on its own and under jackets and coats.

The cowl is worked from the top down in the round. Central increase line is echoed by Estonian braids which separate layers of different textures. Starting with the broken rib, proceed to the diagonal ribbed pattern, then blackberry stitch, and finish the bottom off with some nupps.

  • Depth at the deepest point 11” / 28cm
  • Circumference at the top 19” / 48cm
  • Circumference at the bottom 31” / 78cm

  • Sample cowl: Tweedy by Hedgehog Fibers and Madelinetosh (50% falkland merino wool, 37.5% recycled wool, 12.5% thread waste; 3.5oz / 100g, 252yds / 230m), 1 skein, color Future Reflections
  • OR 260yds / 240m of DK weight yarn, preferably solid or slightly tonal colorway

Needles and Gauge

  • US 6 / 4mm circular needles or the size needed to obtain gauge of 25 sts and 34 rows in 4” / 10cm in Stockinette, blocked
  • 16” / 40cm long for the top part and 24” / 60cm long for the bottom, OR with a long cable for magic loop
  • A crochet hook for nupps of the same size as the working needles

  • The cowl is worked in the round from the top down.
  • The top section is worked in a broken rib pattern. After it, increases made along the central spine shape the front part as a triangle.

  • The bottom section features evenly spaced increases for a rounded look.
