Billy the Bear Lovey
A free version is also available.
This teddy bear lovey crochet pattern is perfect as a newborn baby gift or to sell at market stalls.
It’s an intermediate-level pattern made using worsted weight yarn. While all the details are listed below, here’s a quick overview: this bear lovey involves colour changes, working in the round, and the lemon peel stitch. If you’re comfortable with colour changes and crocheting in the round, even confident beginners can give it a try.
The pattern is free to view on my blog here, but if you’d prefer a printable, ad-free PDF version, it’s available to purchase in my Ravelry store.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Aran/Worsted Weight yarn. I recommend Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran or Yarn and Colors Epic in the following colours: Oak (80grams = 120m/131yds), Light blue (50grams = 85m/93yds), Dark blue (24grams = 41m/45yds), Natural (1 gram = 1.7m/1.85yds)
- Crochet hook: Size 4mm (G) & 5mm (H)
- Other materials: Stuffing, Needle, Scissors, Pins, Stitch marker, Black embroidery thread or 8mm safety eyes, Scrap black DK yarn for nose
Bear lovey size
Using the yarn and hooks specified in this pattern, my creation was 45cm/17.8” long (from corner to opposite corner across the blanket) by 31cm/12.2” high (from the top of the head to the bottom of the blanket).
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however keep tension consistent throughout. For reference, my gauge was as follows:
Amigurumi Pieces (4mm hook):
6 sc stitches on 2.5cm/ 1”
6 rows on 2.5cm/ 1”
Blanket (5mm hook):
8 dc sts on 5cm/2.5”
3 rows on 5cm/2.5”
Additional Information
- Pattern language: English
- Pattern terms: US terms
- Stitches used: Magic circle, Chain, Slip Stitch, Single Crochet, Double Crochet, Lemon Peel Stitch (alternating sc & dc), increases and decreases
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label for the amigurumi pieces. This will stop the stuffing from appearing through your stitches. You will also need to change crochet hook size for the blanket.
- Eyes: In this pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Instructions are included for both. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
- Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
- X-Shaped Single Crochet: For all amigurumi parts, I have used the X-Shaped Single Crochet stitch. This is completely optional. However, if you decide not to use this technique, I recommend using a 3.5mm (E) crochet hook for all amigurumi pieces if using worsted/aran weight yarn.

However, the pattern itself cannot be reproduced, sold, or redistributed in any way without the designers’ consent.
